“It is not down in any map; true places never are.”

 Herman Melville

I first visited Cortona, Italy in 1985 as a University of Georgia (UGA) undergraduate student.  Since then, I’ve returned as a graduate student, as a professor of painting, guest lecturer, and artist with UGA’s Studies Abroad Program, as a landscape painter and photographer, and as a lover of life in the Italian culture.

I paint and teach in many mediums including oil, acrylic, gouache, and watercolor, as well as the more historic mediums of egg tempera and fresco.  I’ve taught and directed the painting program at the Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts in Winston-Salem, NC, as well as undergraduate and graduate level painting at UGA.  I’ve also taught stone lithography at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and through workshops I’ve led at my own studio.

My painting and stone lithography studios are located on the historic Rancho Monte Allegre in Santa Barbara, CA.  My work is collected across the country and I am honored to have my work installed at many resorts including Bellagio in Las Vegas, Shutters,  Casa del Mar, and The Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara.

For many years I’ve wanted to share my experiences with others. It is with this in mind that I’ve developed PLEIN AIR TUSCANY.  Through a unique lens of my collective time in this region, I’m able to offer a distinguished program of art and culture.  It is my aspiration to help you continue to flourish (or begin!) as a painter and to share with you an immersion in the beauty of Tuscany, it’s people, and it’s unforgettable and breathtaking landscapes.
